The GymMap Story

I started going to the gym back in the early 1980s — a time when the gym was first and foremost a community: a place where everyone knew each other, and a training partner was always there to spot you.

After that, my career took me into a completely different world: over three decades of leadership in the most demanding international security operations — from squad leader in the Finnish Defence Forces to tactical intelligence, close protection, and military advisory work across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It taught me something no data can replace: reading people.

When I came back to gyms over the years, I noticed that technology was no longer in short supply — but that sense of community had disappeared behind headphones. That's why I built GymMap: not as an algorithm making guesses, but as a place where someone genuinely notices if you stop showing up.

Today the platform covers over 10,000 gyms across several European countries — but the principle is the same as 40 years ago: a real person finds the right person better than data alone.
